Dental Emergencies We Treat
- Severe toothaches and ongoing dental pain
- Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
- Knocked-out teeth caused by injury or trauma
- Lost or damaged fillings and crowns
- Dental abscesses and signs of infection, including swelling
- Broken or damaged dentures
- Injuries to the gums, lips, tongue, or cheeks
- Objects lodged between teeth that cannot be removed at home
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
- For a knocked-out tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Gently rinse it and, if possible, place it back into the socket or store it in milk. Contact us immediately, as prompt treatment is critical.
- For a severe toothache: Rinse with warm water, floss carefully to remove any trapped debris, and apply a cold compress to help reduce swelling. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums.
- For a chipped or broken tooth: Save any broken pieces if possible, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress to minimize swelling.
- For a lost filling or crown: Keep the restoration if you can find it and avoid chewing on the affected side until you can be seen.
- For swelling or a possible abscess: Rinse gently with warm salt water and contact our office right away, as dental infections require prompt attention.

When to Seek Emergency Dental Care
While some dental issues can wait for a routine appointment, others require immediate attention. Severe or increasing pain, facial or oral swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth, or signs of infection should all be evaluated as soon as possible. If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, contact our office. Prompt treatment can often prevent further complications and improve the chances of saving a tooth.
If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, significant facial trauma, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, call 911 or seek emergency medical care immediately.
